Celebrating International Women's Day 2022

Tuesday 8 March was International Women’s Day, a chance to recognise and support the achievements of women worldwide. Find out more about the day.

A story of support

This week, on Tuesday 8 March, we celebrated International Women’s Day. On our social media channels we shared the story of Kirsty, one of our Lothian Breastfeeding Buddies, and invited members of our community to tell us who the important women in their lives were.

Kirsty said: “It wasn’t until I had finished breastfeeding my daughter that I realised who had helped me. And what surprised me even more is that it was someone who had never breastfed!

“When I mentioned to my mum, Karyn, that she’d been really supportive and seemed to know quite a bit about breastfeeding, I learned that she had really wanted to breastfeed but things hadn’t worked out.

“I’m forever grateful that my mum was there to support me. I’m sure the fact that I’ve breastfed two babies till they were 12 months has something to do with the support she gave me.”

#BreakTheBias

The theme of the day was #BreakTheBias – imagining a gender equal world free of bias and discrimination. We took the opportunity to reflect on the war in Ukraine and other conflict zones around the world, where babies continue to be born in the midst of chaos and war raging around them.
